The Nyanza landfill, Kigali’s sole garbage dumping site, based in Kicukiro district will shut down within the next three years as there are plans to set up a new landfill. This will be a welcome relief for many living and working around this site; an environment characterized by flies and bad odours. The dumping site lies in an area very close to new buildings and businesses. Those occupying those new buildings are finding it hard to get used to the flies and the stench.
The mayor of the city of Kigali, Fidele Ndayisaba, says there are some measures that have been taken to minimize these bad conditions.
If all goes as planned, in three years time, this situation will be a thing of the past and there will be a safer area in place, suitable for a dumping site. According to news reports, experts working on the phase-out of the site indicate that the landfill can be renovated and the garbage reduced by covering it with soil to avoid the fires that rage from underneath.

The biggest challenge to the phase out according to news reports is that the site receives indiscriminate waste, ranging from medical to solid and liquid waste. The site receives at least 400 tonnes of waste everyday and estimates indicate that this could increase three times in five years.
